I am Elizabeth Schindler. As I am reading and rereading A Year of Days, with such delight and such awe, I was reminded of the first time I ever saw you. It was January 1978 and we had just arrived in Hawaii for a USN tour of duty. My husband was a pilot and soon after the boxes arrived he was sent off on a mission. (What's new??) So on a particular Sunday the 2 children at the time and the one expected soon and I took off to find the closest Episcopal church. Well, what a surprise when we found it and yes, it was formerly a hospital and now a lovely sanctuary nestled in the sugar cane fields. No sooner had we settled into our seats when from the back of the church we saw Yes, a bishop's staff and there you were. It was so unexpected...our first experience worshiping in Hawaii, an old hospital and of course the Bishop.
Of course our children never forgot and twas funny as years went by, they thought that bishops were just like that...there often and of course a part of every church.
I love your book, A Year of Days.
You are so real and so honest and yet speak of a spiritual depth that is so pure and holy. Thank you for writing such a wonderful contribution to my own spiritual journey. We are now retired with 4 children and yes....10 grandchildren. We attend Emmanuel Episcopal church in Va. Beach and we are very involved with Cursillo. That has been a large step in our journey. I wonder if you have had that experience.
Perhaps one day we will meet, but in the meantime I remain a close friend in our faith journey together. That is just how your book has affected me.
Sincerely, Elizabeth Schindler
